Specialist Tuition

All students have different strengths and weaknesses and will embark on their own learning journey and start at different points. Specialist tuition is tailored to each child’s needs, uses an individual’s strengths, multisensory, structured and cumulative learning.  Every session is different but will always focus on a combination of phonics, reading, spelling and writing, alongside the development of cognitive processing skills such as working memory and phonological awareness.

Lessons are generally taught individually as they are targeted as a wave three intervention, are highly individualised and based on fine-tuned assessments and take place when limited progress has been made in literacy after normal interventions have been put in place. A diagnosis of dyslexia is not necessarily needed but the specialised nature of the tuition does mean it is aimed at children with a known or suspected Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD).

  • All tuition starts with a range of assessments to identify gaps in learning, strengths, weaknesses and to provide a base line to monitor progress.
  • Each term, specific targets are set using the ‘assess, plan, do review’ model which are shared with home and school.
  • A multisensory approach avoids relying solely on areas where children have a difficulty. Using auditory, visual and kinaesthetic activities enables links to form, and makes it easier to recall information.
  • A structured, sequential and cumulative approach ensures a skill is mastered before moving on to a new skill without gaps in learning and ensures linkages can be made.
  • Overlearning helps commit learning to memory. Overlearning means we work on the same objective but in different ways as many times as is needed.
  • Memory strategies, aids and alternative methods for recording are used to help compensate for working memory weaknesses.

Lessons take place at your child’s school during the day with the agreement of their school. Alternatively, sessions could be arranged after school or at my office in Aylsham. It is recommended that a student has at least 20 sessions to ensure they receive the full benefit from the tuition. Lessons generally last for 1 hour or in some cases 45 minutes.
